Scrappy Hunter's Star in Origins by Basic Gray

Do you remember this quilt top?  It languished for two years, but it's finally finished.  Well, here it is, all quilted and bound!

These are not my usual colors, but I do like the overall effect of fading from dark to light with the multi-color hunter's stars.  The fabric is called Origins by Basic Gray for Moda.  This quilt was made using a layer cake and a jellyroll -- the only yardage require was for the border -- from a pattern from A Baker's Dozen.

The quilting is an all-over simple feather pattern, which I think worked well with this relatively busy pattern.


Here is a close-up of the quilting.  I used a 50-weight Aurifil Mako cotton in yellow.  If I were to do it over again, I would choose a variegated thread with some greens and browns.



It's somewhat difficult to see, but this is the hunter star pattern that emerges from the blocks:

 

 The backing is a print called Blossom from Picnic by Jenean Morrison. I'm not sure when this collection came out, but it was in the super reduced section of my LQS.

Finally, I found these care labels too -- not that I haven't thrown quilts in just the regular wash and dry cycles before.

WIP Wednesday and Giant Churndash Tutorial (Part 2)

I don't think I've ever done this before, but I already have my binding prepped!  For not just one, but two quilts!  Are worlds colliding yet?

CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS - SOLID FABRIC
You will need approximately 3 yards of a contrasting solid -- for this quilt I used Kona in white.

Cut (7) strips 8.5" x WOF; keeping the strip in two layers, subcut as follows:
a. (2) strips - 8.5"; 8.5"; 4.5" - you should end up with (8) 8.5" square and (4) 8.5" x 4.5" rectangle;
b. (1) strip - 8.5"; 4.5", 4.5" - You should end up with (2) 8.5" square and (4) 8.5" x 4.5" rectangle
c. (4) strips - 4.5" rectangles - cut a total of 28 rectangles - there should be some left over fabric

Cut (5) strips 9" x WOF - subcut each strip into 9" squares for a total of 18 squares.

Make the half square triangles (HST)



Using one 9" square of the solid, draw a diagonal line through the center. Layer with one 9" print square like so.

  Using a 1/4" seam, sew a line on either side of the center line just drawn. Iron to set the stitch lines, and then cut along the drawn line. Fold out and press. You should end up with two squares that look like this. Now, trim down to 8 1/2" -- I like to make my HSTs oversized so I can trim them down to the exact size.  BUT, if you are an HST pro, if you start with 8 7/8" blocks, you should end up with an 8.5" square when your triangles are complete -- without any trimming!  Repeat with another solid 9" square and the 9" square of the same print.

Put all your various pieces together like so, sewing one row at a time.  Once all the blocks were complete, I used a 3 x3 setting  to end up with a 72" x 72" top with no borders. Last, but not least, I finished the seventh block of the Mystery Designer's BOM from 2011. I am WAY behind on this.  Of course, I'm linking up to WIP Wednesday hosted by Freshly Pieced!

Scrappy Hunter's Star -- almost finished!

I thought I would go ahead and post the almost-finished quilt top, as I think I am running out of steam on this one. I might have to put it away for a while before taking it up again. It lacks a final border, which is in a dark green floral. I say that I might put it away for a while because I am not liking how the two inner borders came together. Plus, I really stretched out one of the sides while piecing it and am thinking of ripping both borders out to start again.


The details: the fabric is Origins by Basic Gray for Moda. The pattern is from "A Baker's Dozen," from the staff of That Patchwork Place. The pattern is kinda neat in that the entire quilt is made from a combined layer cake and jelly roll and measures about 85" x 85" when finished. Almost all the fabric with a few odds and ends are used. I'll post the directions for the blocks at a later date. As you can see, most but not all my points and corners matched up. But, the various prints are interesting enough that I think I can get away with it. One of these days I will have a precisely pieced top. :)
